Form 4868—Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. File this tax form to file for a tax extension. If you aren’t ready for the April 15 deadline to file a federal income tax return, you can file an extension by mail with Form 4868.
To file Form 4868 in 2024, you must have estimated tax liability for 2023. After subtracting the taxes paid during the course of the tax year through estimated tax payments and withholding, you will know your tax liability. If it’s below $0, you aren’t required to pay the IRS.
