Form I-9 – Employment Eligibility Verification is the USCIS document that’s mandatory for all workers. Along with Form I-9, documents must be presented to the employer to establish authorization to work in the United States and identity.
Not all documents are accepted by the Citizenship and Immigration Services though. The agency only allows employees to provide certain documents for identity and work authorization purposes. Some documents can also be used for proving both.

Identity and Work Authorization Verification
- Federal States of Micronesia Passport (must have Form I-94 or I-94A)
- Foreign Passport with I-551 Stamp
- Form I-766 (must have a photograph)
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- Republic of the Marshall Islands Passport (must have Form I-94 or I-94A)
- US Passport Book
- US Passport Card
Identity Verification
The following documents can be used for establishing identity only.
- Canadian Driver’s License
- Driver’s License
- Federal ID Card
- Local ID Card
- Military Dependent’s ID Card
- School ID (must have a photograph)
- State ID Card
- US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card
- US Military Card
- Voter’s Registration Card
The workers under the age of 18 can use the following documents.
- Clinic Record
- Day-care Record
- Doctor Record
- Hospital Record
- Nursery School Record
- School Record Report
- School Report Card
Authorization to Work Verification
- Certification of Report of Birth issued by the Department of State
- Certified Copy of Birth Certificate issued by a State or County
- Employment Authorization Document issued by the Department of Homeland Security
- Form I-197
- Native American Tribal Document
- Original Birth Certificate
- US Citizen ID Card
