How to Complete the SF-86 Form?

- SF-86 Forms can be completed by hand or electronically. Applicants must bring their Social Security card and birth certificate with them. You may also be asked to provide proof of legal name change.
- There are 34 sections of the SF-86. Each section contains specific questions that are used to determine whether an individual is a security risk. As an applicant, you must answer all the questions completely and honestly.
- To complete an SF-86 Form, you must gather your educational and employment history, information about your overseas travels, and any foreign references. Once you have filled out the forms, you need to submit them electronically.
Aside from your SF-86, you will also need to provide your fingerprints. Your fingerprints expire in the system after 120 days. If you are unable to provide your fingerprints, you must contact the FSO to arrange for the reprinting of your form.
After you fill out the SF-86, it is automatically transferred to a case management system. Then, an investigator will interview you and your friends and family.
