Social Security Card Renewal

Renewing a Social Security card is effortless and the application shouldn’t take you long. There are two ways you can apply for a Social Security card renewal.

You can submit a Social Security card renewal online but it can also be done by filling out a paper Form SS-5—Application for a Social Security Card.

There isn’t a form for a renewal application. Use the same form for both applying for a new Social Security card and renewing one. If you’re renewing your Social Security card regardless of the reason whether it be due to lost or wear out, check the Line 12 as yes.

Application for a Renewal Online

Submit your online application for Social Security card renewal online by using your my Social Security account. This is the easiest way you can submit your Social Security card renewal application.

However, not everyone can use their my Social Security account to apply for a replacement Social Security card. The same also applies to applications for a Social Security card for the first time.

You must meet the requirements below to submit a Social Security card renewal application.

  • You are a U.S. citizen with a U.S. mailing address and you’re age 18 or older.
  • You have a state-issued identification or a driver’s license.
  • The purpose of your Social Security renewal application is to apply for a new card, not due to name change. If that’s the case, apply for a Social Security card through filling out Form SS-5.

If your state of residence is Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, or West Virginia, you can’t apply through my Social Security. This is because these states aren’t enrolled in the program. Those who are a resident of these states can only submit their applications through filing a Form SS-5, just like submitting a new application.
