W-9 Form—Request for Taxpayer Identification Number is the IRS tax form used for requesting and providing correct taxpayer identification number. It is used whenever an individual, company, entity, or organization needs the taxpayer identification number to fulfill their tax duties.
Assume you’re a business owner and hired a contractor to install new glass in your business. You must report the income paid to the contractor using Form 1099-MISC. To file one, you will need the contractor’s legal name and taxpayer identification number. You can request the required information using the W-9 Form. W-9 Form 2021 Online Fillable
To file W-9 online, you won’t need anything in addition other than your computer. You can simply fill out online. Once you enter everything required on W-9 and select your tax classification, you can then download it to send it via e-mail.
One thing you need to keep in mind is you must sign it just like any other tax document. Use an electronic signature to complete this. If you have an e-signature ready, drop it on to the W-9 and you’ll be ready to download it. The W-9 is only used for providing the taxpayer identification number and it will be kept between you and the requester. Having said that signing isn’t that big of a deal. W-9 Form 2021 Instructions
Now that you know how to obtain a W-9, here is how to file one.
Box 1: Enter your name.
Box 2: Enter your business name. If you don’t have a business name, leave it blank.
Box 3: Select your tax classification. You can select any of the following.
- Individual/Sole Proprietor/Single Member LLC
- C Corporation
- S Corporation
Box 4: Enter exemption codes if any.
Box 5 and 6: Enter your address.
Box 7: Enter account numbers if any.
On the right, you can also enter the requester’s name but it isn’t mandatory. Once these are done, the only thing left to do is entering your taxpayer identification number. You can either enter your Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number.
