The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) has a long history of providing health coverage to low-income and vulnerable Virginians. In order to get health insurance coverage, you must be a Virginia resident and have a valid state ID. You must also provide proof of your Social Security number, home address, and family size. You must also meet the income requirements for your category of assistance, such as the Aged or Disabled Waiver or the CCC Plus Program.

It’s important to know that you must renew your Virginia Medicaid coverage each year. This is known as a “redetermination.” States received additional Medicaid funding during the COVID-19 pandemic on the condition that they would not disenroll people from their programs. Enrollees will receive their renewal packets in late 2023 or early 2024. During this time, it is especially important to review your assets and income, as you might be required to reduce them to the Medicaid limit.
