How to Get a Real ID in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvanians who want a REAL ID can start getting ready now. They can take required documents to any PennDOT driver license center for pre-verification.

If you’re a Pennsylvania resident, you can get a Real ID in addition to your current driver’s license. This will be valid for federal purposes, including boarding airplanes, accessing hospitals, and applying for government benefits. You can also use it for driving and voting. In 2024, all travelers will need a Real ID to pass airport security checks.

You can apply for a Real ID online or in person. If you received your first state ID after September 2003, PennDOT may already have your required documents on file. You can check by submitting a pre-verification request here. You can order a Real ID online and receive it within 15 days if your documentation is verified. You can also visit a Driver’s License Center or a REAL ID Center to verify your documentation and receive your new Real ID immediately.

If the name on your legal document (birth certificate, passport, marriage certificate, etc.) differs from the name on your Social Security card, you will need to show a legal name change document. You can find more information about acceptable name change documents here.

Real ID Pennsylvania Deadline

Deadline

After numerous postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pennsylvanians only have one year left until the federal REAL ID requirement goes into effect. Beginning May 3, 2023, residents will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to pass through TSA checkpoints for domestic air travel, enter military bases, and enter federal buildings requiring identification. The process of getting a Real ID is simple and can be completed online or in person.

Requirements

PennDOT is urging customers who want a Real ID to begin preparing by gathering the required documentation and ensuring they have a valid photo ID. Documents needed include:

  • A current, unexpired PA driver’s license or photo ID.
  • Proof of identity (original or certified copy of birth certificate with raised seal or valid U.S. Passport).
  • Proof of social security number.
  • Proof of any legal name changes and two proofs of current, physical Pennsylvania address (a current and unexpired PA vehicle registration or insurance card with your name and address on it and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with your name and address on it).

If you received your first Pennsylvania driver’s license, learner’s permit or ID card AFTER September 1, 2003, PennDOT may already have your required documents on file. You can check by completing the online Pre-Verification System. Otherwise, you will need to visit a Driver License Center and have the required documentation verified and imaged in person.
