Form 4506 (not 4506-T) is the IRS tax form for requesting a copy of tax return, hence the name—Request for Copy of Tax Return. This tax form is similar to the Form 4506-T but can only be used to request a copy of original tax return.
To know why you should fill out a Form 4506 and mail it to the IRS, you first need to know the difference between a tax return and a tax transcript.
A tax return is the original Form 1040 and forms, schedules, and other supporting documents that is used for filing a 1040.
On the other hand, a tax transcript is a summary of all this information. You can think of tax transcripts as a less detailed tax return that shows your adjusted gross income, taxes owed, and tax refund. So don’t request a tax transcript if you need the details.
